Trisha Stringham of Romeoville held onto her two sons, overwhelmed by the 150 friends, neighbors and strangers who stood in her front yard cheering and crying.
"They were welcoming me to my new house, but they were really welcoming me home," she said. Trisha and sons J.T. and Dominic won a dream beyond all dreams -- a completely renovated house, thanks to the generosity of a community.
Community Christian Church in Romeoville sponsored a home makeover fashioned after the TV show "Extreme Home Makeover." It turned into a stunning three-day project during the May 19-20 weekend and a show of community spirit for people with construction skills and without. It was three days filled with a lot of heart, business donations, gifts of food, and neighbors who just came to help any way they could. "I am overwhelmed. All I wanted was a new washer," Trisha said. What she got was a repainted interior, new carpets, furniture, bed linens, remodeled bathroom, new windows and siding, and an attached garage turned into an addition to the living room. A new washer and dryer was included, too.
