One Sunday morning we were sitting in service and someone was up on stage saying that part of the journey of a Christ-follower was contributing to our mission. We heard that Kids’ City needed people and that this was the opportunity some of us had been waiting for.
We looked at each other. Without saying a word, we both knew we’d be working in Kids’ City somehow. We signed up for a tour to figure out where we might fit in best in Kids’ City. It didn’t take long for Tammy Melchien to convince us that we would be great classroom leaders. Since we had five kids of our own it was starting to make sense to us and Tammy agreed it was a natural fit. So here we are... and we couldn’t be happier!
But on a more serious note, the experience ended up being far more than we ever thought possible. We thought we’d show up, play some games with the kids, you know…babysit while Mom and Dad are in service. Instead, we have both found such fulfillment and joy in working with these young Christ-followers. Every week as we bring them the Big Idea message using Bible stories, games, crafts, and musical worship, we see them really absorbing the message. Even the youngest ones. The kids believe so much in God’s power. Their faith is so complete. They’ll share stories of things that happened and how God helped them or their parents. Sometimes sad or scary things happen in the lives of children, and knowing Christ really does help them deal with life. There is nothing like hearing a child give testimony to the power of Jesus. Kids really get it. It gives you goose pimples sometimes.
We had the opportunity to help out with the DIVE Baptism class. It was really exciting for Mike to see one of his students there, taking it all so seriously, making the decision to be baptized. It was huge, and Mike felt like he’d played a part in that decision. That’s the part that hits you. You’re not just part of that child’s life for an hour while Mom and Dad are in church. You can be a part of that child’s eternal life. You can help a child give their life to Christ. What could be more important than that?
