Most of us have spent a little time thinking about how great it would be to have anything and everything we want. For some of us it is abouthaving the best and coolest stuff. But for others it’s not about stuff, it’sabout finally having the relationship we always wanted. It’s about having acertain future mapped out or determined. But what if when we got what we wanted, we realized it wasn't what we wanted all along? We think doing our own thing and putting other things before God is what will make us happy, but it won't.
Have you ever had to go home when something was wrong? Maybe you received a bad grade on a test. Perhaps you tried to run away but realized you were an idiot for thinking you could make it on your own. We have all had those moments when our journey home was full of uncertainty - What was going to happen when I got back home? Becoming a Christ follower isn't about getting religious or getting your act together. It's about coming home.
Sure, finding our way back to God has a lot to do with my decision-making. It has a lot to do with my actions. But I can't do it on my own. In fact, God never asks me to even try. Finding my way back to God has less to do with me and more to do with God's amazing grace, mercy, and love. We can’t do anything to help ourselves find our way back to God. It's all about God and His grace for us.
When we find our way back to God, our Father in heaven throws a celebration. This isn't some little-kid birthday party, it's like the biggest and best party you've ever been to. We're told that when even one person finds his way back to God that all of the angels celebrate with God. When we find our way back to God all of heaven celebrates!
We all love a story with a perfect ending...you know, the ones where everyone lives happily-ever-after. Sitcoms have even programmed us into thinking all our problems can be solved in 23 minutes. But not every story has the perfect ending. The story of the Prodigal Son has one of strangest endings to a story you'll ever find. When we find our way back to God, we're joining the mission of God: helping others find their way back to Him.
